Ahhhh the homework

This has been an interesting journey. I learned a lot of new things I did not know about the web and I thought I was pretty savvy. The google alerts have been coming in here and there and it is such a great tool. The info is not new but at least I know it is out there for everyone to see. I did go on multiple search engines. Google and Yahoo seem to bring up the most info. I was happy to see our website right away and tons of articles about our organization. There was one site on blogsearch.google.com that surprised me. There was an article about an issue in our area regarding affordable housing. It was listed under an affordable housing and community development site for professionals. Who knew?

I did read the other organizations blogs and posted a comment on Teaneck Creek Conservancy. Silly me, I posted two comments and thought the first didn't go through. It probably did, even though my computer froze up. Even with all this great technology you still can't stop that once in a while freeze! I am looking forward to continuing this workshop.

Welcome to our blog

Welcome to our blog. Last year, I left my 14 year empolyment as a practice manager in a physician's office. I still remain in touch and decided to work a very part time schedule of one day a week. I have a toddler at home and a very active schedule in community activities.

Last year I was asked to join the Board of Skylands Clean, INC, a grassroots environmental group in the Highlands Region of New Jersey. Our mission includes land use issues and water protection in the Highlands Region.

I am the newest member of the Board and recently have taken on the role of Treasurer. I am very excited about this organization. We have grown through the years and as technology has advanced, we continue to learn new ways to stay in communication with our members. We recently changed our email formats which are quite eye catching and organized.

My hope for this workshop is to continue our networking through the newest means of technology. It will be an advantage to be able to reach our membership through multiple means of communication. You can visit us on the web at www.skyclean.org.

By Way of Introduction.............

By way of introduction, I am a retired special education teacher from a public school system. I have 2 school-age children, which keeps me busy, and I volunteer with several local non-profit organizations. In 1987 I co-founded, and have long served as the president of, Skylands CLEAN, Inc. We are a grass-roots environmental group working on land use, water protection and sustainability issues in general in the northern portion of the Highlands Region of New Jersey. Our website is www.skyclean.org.

While some of the same issues remain as they did in the 1980's and 1990's, the environmental “landscape” has changed sufficiently to warrant us reviewing what we do and how we do it – and, in these new technological times, how we communicate with current and prospective constituents.

We have recently put some modern communication (e-mail) software to use, and are working to set up powerful database capability. I hope that this workshop will introduce us to additional, possible vehicles for networking with individuals who might be interested in our work.
